Global voices lift veil on mysterious Xiangxi
Xiangxi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture is being seen through new eyes, as international journalists and content creators spend three days exploring the landscapes, culture and stories of change across Xiangxi, Hunan province.
The journey opened on Tuesday in Fenghuang Ancient Town, a historic riverside town where wooden stilt houses and old stone streets preserve a distinctive cultural landscape. The town is also closely associated with the Recollections of West Hunan, the celebrated novel by Chinese writer Shen Congwen.

This literary connection soon became a point of cultural exchange. On the Tuojiang River, long woven into Fenghuang life, Thai journalist Pichayapa Sutabutra sang a love song about a bond that transcends wealth, social status, and educational background, resonating with the simple, sincere relationships at the heart of Xiangxi.
Influencers donned Miao costumes, took in riverside architecture, and tasted iconic Xiangxi cuisine, including Miao sour fish, a classic lactic-acid fermented delicacy, and savory duck-blood glutinous-rice cakes simmered in rich broth.

The experience also moved beyond heritage, with Nigerian content creator Oluwabunmi Jimoh highlighting Fenghuang's scenery, cuisine and cultural appeal. "The National Day holiday is approaching, and I'd encourage everyone to come," he said.
Meanwhile, French influencer Marius Etrillard praised its architecture, clear waters and variety of experiences. "I can see why this place is a 5A tourist attraction in China," he remarked.

The wider journey will turn to Aizhai Bridge, a landmark suspension bridge in Xiangxi; Dehang Miao Village, a traditional Miao community; and Shibadong village, known as the birthplace of China's targeted poverty alleviation strategy. It will conclude at Laosicheng, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former political center of the Tujia people.
Together, these encounters lift the veil on "Mysterious Xiangxi," revealing a destination far more than scenic beauty; one where vibrant ethnic culture permeates everyday local life.
